Super Karaoke Star Search


The 1994 Super Karaoke Star Search Singing Contest was held at Furama Restaurant and Grand Mandarin on July 22nd - 25th at 8:00 pm. This singing contest was put together by New World Entertainment and Star Entertainment along with the help of promoters: Eddie Lau, See Y. Wong, and Francis Yip, and coordinators: Eden Chan, Stevie Chan, Kevin Kot, Andy Lai, and Ronnie Kaan. On the nights of the event, we had amazing staff members: Laura Gong, Katya Chan, Jina Yu, Stephen Yuen, and John Kwan, and hair stylist: Alice Kwok who helped to make the night memorable, enjoyable and fashionable.

On Monday, August 15th, the final contestants gathered at IIT Herman Hall at 7:00 pm to determine the final winners of the 1994 Super Karaoke Star Search Singing Contest. There were many talented aspiring young singers that participated in the event, but as with any competition, there must be a final winner. Out of the 8 finalists for the Mandarin and Cantonese categories, 3 singers came out victorious in each category. The 8 finalists in the Cantonese category, in no particular order, consist of: Lorron Leung, Helen Ming, Irene Wong, Florence Kong, Irene Chan, Wendy Lee, Cathy Shen, and Vincent So. The finalists in the Mandarin category, in no particular order, consist of: Lee Yee Wah, Chien Hsiu Ju, Claudine Sheng, Zhu Xiao Quan, Jenny Yu, Michael Chan, Peter Hsiao and Edward Chan. The top three contestants in the Cantonese category is: second runner up, Lorron Leung, first runner up, Kathy Shen and the winner Florence Kong. The top three contestants in the Mandarin category is: second runner up, Lee Yee Wah, first runner up, Michael Chan and the winner Chien Hsiu Ju.

Though there were 16 finalists and only 6 winners, not all of them went home without any recognition. All 16 finalists were recognized for their potential talents but there were four who stood out amongst the crowd. First up, recognized for having the best vocals is Cantonese finalist, Vincent So. Secondly, for having the best showmanship is Cantonese finalist and winner of her category, Florence Kong. The singer acknowledged for having the best presentation is Mandarin finalist and first runner up in his category, Michael Chan. Last but not least, the favorite singer of the night is Cantonese finalist and third runner up, Lorron Leung. Congratulations to the four singers that are recognized for their special talents; they must have put on a great performance.

Besides the contestants putting on a show for the judges and audience, there were also guest performances to ease the tension in the atmosphere from the winners of the 1st and 2nd Windy Cup Singing Contest, the 2nd Chinatown Singing Contest, the ShangHai Singing Contest and the 15th New Talent Singing Contest; Lori Mui, Paul Chan, Rose Yip, Jennifer Guo, and Judy Chen in respective order.
